Ektralamp FAQs

Q: What are Ektralamps?

A: Ektralamp is a brand name of Wolcraft for a line of lights consisting of slim light tubes containing arrays of LEDs. The unique design provides even illumination along the entire width of the lamp which can be as narrow as ten inches or as wide as sixty inches.

Q: Where are Ektralamps made?

A: The lamps are handcrafted in a suburb of Cleveland Ohio.

Q: How soon can I expect my Ektralamp to ship?

A: While we often have a few piano and music stand lamps in stock, most often the lights are made to order. Normally lights will ship within two calendar weeks from time of order. Often they will ship sooner. We will let you know if there are any delays beyond two weeks, and let you know by e-mail when your lamp ships.

Q: What accounts for the high price of Ektralamps?

A: Ektralamps are hand made in the United States of the finest materials. Metal is solid brass or aluminum. The even lighting and long life provided by LEDs also comes at a premium price.

Q: What are LEDs?

A: LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. LEDs are small solid-state electronic devices which radiate light when small amounts of current are passed through them. LEDs are available in a variety of colors.

Q: What are the benefits of LEDs?

A: LEDs create almost no heat, consume very little power, are very long lasting, and are not harmful to the environment when thrown out.

Q: My LED flashlight shines a blue light. Are all LED lights bluish?

A: LEDs come in many colors. While flashlights generally use cold (bluish) colors, our LED lamps emit a warm color that is similar to a flourescent lamp.

Q: How do I replace burned out LEDs?

A: As LEDs do not burn out and thus do not need to be replaced, they are permanently installed.

Q: Do LEDs burn out?

A: Unlike incandescent or flourescent light sources, LEDs do not burn out. In time the amount of light produced by LEDs gradually reduces. Typically LEDs reduce to half-brightness after from 50,000 to 100,000 hours of use. If you used LED-based lamps 8 hours a day, 365 days a year, the LEDs would have a useful life of more than 17 years!

Q: How long do batteries last in battery powered Ektralamps?

A: Our test have shown alkaline batteries to be reduced to about 1/2 voltage (brightness) after constant use, 24 hours a day, for seven days.

Q. Do you ship to Canada?

A. Yes. We have shipped to several Canadian customers.

Q: If we order an Ektralamp, can the base be stained to match the casework on our organ console? Would this cost extra? I suppose we would have to send you a sample.

A: Yes, a lamp base can be stained to match the casework. We do need a sample, and there will be a $50 charge for matching.
